headed up granite mountain thursday with some buddies. for some reason they went to college in the midwest and forgot what mountains are, so we got out there as soon as they returned. it was cloudy with t-storms forecasted but i was hoping we would get lucky--and we did. we headed straight up the first avalanche gully and meandered left to that rock backbone and up to the summit. about halfway up we emerged from the clouds to see rainier, stuart, all the snoqualmie peaks. the valleys were filled with fog and the mountains peeking out through it. we ate lunch and took a nap in the sun. the register is full of water...nice. fog rolled back in and we took the trail back. there is no snow to speak of on the south face. there is still several feet along the summit ridge and in the basin. it isn't a problem though, don't even need gaiters, you can stay on the rocks.
