A terrible event unfolded on Aasgard Pass as we were descending it yesterday evening. Condolences to his family. http://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2010/aug/07/westside-man-killed-in-fall-into-waterfall-on/ LEAVENWORTH — A 47-year-old man from Western Washington was killed after falling about 15 feet into a waterfall on Asgaard Pass, between the Enchantments and Colchuck Lake on Friday, authorities said. The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office will release the man’s name and hometown after family members are notified, said Sgt. Chris Forman. He said someone was hiking in the area, which is about 10 miles southwest of Leavenworth, and found the man. They called for help using an emergency distress beacon shortly before 8:30 p.m., he said. The man reportedly had a head injury, and could not feel his legs, Forman said. He said CPR was administered when the man’s condition deteriorated, but he died before a military helicopter from Whidbey Island arrived. The helicopter canceled its mission because military protocol is to assist only in life-and-death situations when the person is still alive. A search and rescue crew hiked in Saturday morning to recover the man’s body, Forman said

When ascending Aasgard, STAY LEFT of the waterfall and buttress, Descending STAY RIGHT. Follow cairns.

It wasn't that late really +- 7:30pm, sun was still shining on the pass. Just a matter of losing the correct way while descending. frown.gif

Rather than assume that he got off the trail, by accident, why not assume that he chose to explore the place he loved, and had an accident doing that?

I wasn't being critical. What a shame.

People die on Aasgard almost every year and the permit system only enforces that. Sorry to hear about another victim. RIP

Regardless of permits or not, time of day, experience level, this is a very sad tragedy. My condolences to his friends and family during this time of greiving for them. Stay safe out there everybody!

The permit system could be a factor because many more people attempt the trip in a day rather than overnight. It is a pretty long distance and elevation gain if you are not in shape. Trying to race the sun is not a good idea, take a headlamp.
