This page of this thread shows the utility of the feature. A few posts up I suggested we take a wait and see approach. So far 13 people have "liked" that idea, yet the thread hasn't been inundated with 13 identical posts saying "I agree".

I'd still prefer to see the feature remain in place for a month and another poll done at the end of the month.
I just don't think people have given it a chance and are making knee-jerk decisions based on unfounded fears.
Personally, I'd like to see this thing evolve into the ability to be able to tag posts as Funny, Interesting, Insightful, etc.
Heck, if people don't like seeing it, just add an option to the user's profile that simply disables the feature for their view, i.e. doesn't display the buttons and/or the green/red result of voting so that we can continue to refine and develop the idea further.
I have no doubt that at some point people wouldn't mind being able to set a filter so they simply don't see the posts that are rated highly negative. Some people prefer only to read good news and avoid the negatives/controversy.

Definitely. There's also cairns and neon pink flags.

agree - an option to Ignore Ratings to ignore the green and red flags.
If we can ignore users, then why not ignore flags as well?
We could add a little paragraph in the FAQ about The Great Debate of September 2010 (I could help write it if developer is too busy)

Nah, then we'd hear about how it's just a popularity feature and the people enabling it are the ones with "friends" here. This feature is gone. It's just not worth the drama. At least it was a good distraction from the TR drama fest. I was really just hoping it might improve the signal to noise quality and steer this forum toward more of a no BS kind of place but guess people are just too sensitive when it comes to any sort of negative feedback, even if that feedback would help improve signal to noise.

I remember forums in the past anyway that even disable the post count thing because it can cause conflicts.
I.E. some people with high post counts think they are better than others or have a higher standing on the forum etc...
Somebody even had a thing in their signature or profile that post count means nothing
