I have always loved being in the mountains this time of year, in late Autumn just before winter sets in. Franz and I always made it a point to do one last trip every year back in the Adirondacks when they were our mountain home. The road is still drive able to the parking lot though I couldn't make it pass the last switch back due to snow and ice, mostly ice. I hiked up through the 6 to 12 inches of snow still able to make out the trail. Higher up when the snow got deeper I just made a bee line for the ridge. I stayed off the main summit due to the amount of snow there, and opted for the top of ridge just East of the summit. The day's forcasted weather had yet in move in giving me a splendid view of the Picket's and so many other peaks. The temp. stayed in the upper 30's on top but the wind chill allowed me all to short of time here. On the way down I met a couple just below the ridge who were as glad as me that we were able to steal one more hike in this year.

Beautifully sensual snow shot!

Thanks for the trip report and great pictures. I'm thinking of going up there Sunday, though it may snow more tonight. Did you take those pictures Friday, November 12, two days ago?

Nope, I was there on Thursday. You should still have good steps kicked in all the way to the top. Hopefully you can get up before the new snow arrives. Enjoy !

Nice pictures. I agree that the fall is one of the best times to hike. I'm not sure about this first thin blanket of snow though -- sometimes it's a PITA.
