Oh what a birthday climb!
Natala, Martin, and I all had birthdays in the same or relative day at this Holiday time of the year. What to do? Birthday climb on 12/18/2010!
We drove out to Longmire in the morning and that night there had been a windstorm throughout the area. Trees were down in many places across the highway that morning. In fact I even saw one tree fall down not 3 seconds ahead of me in the dark. Many of the trees had just recently been cut and only one car could get around them. It was like driving on a logging road at some times.
We started with Don, Natala, John, Matt, Greg, Martin, and I at the Eagle Peak trailhead at 8:00 and went up to 4300 feet on the trail where we put on snowshoes. The winds had died down and we were treated with intermittent blue skies.
We traversed south to a ridgeline, went up it a bit, and then did a long traverse to the base of peak 5880+ around 4600 feet. The peak is located here.
And then we went up to the saddle to the NW and up! The power powder boys trudged to the summit.
And guess what? Don broke out something I have not seen on summits. He broke out mini cupcakes and candles! I was able to make a traditional wish with a lighted candle as well as Natala and Martin. Now that was cool and saaaweet!
5 hours up and 2.5 hours back.
Thank you everyone for being my friends!
