For those who may not be aware. The Coast Savers organization put together an annual clean up event for the Washington coast. Last year 1000 volunteers picked up 16 tons of trash!
Last year i volunteered at Shi Shi Beach.
It took me just 20 minutes to collect this......
In that 20 minutes i realized a few things. One this beach needed a semi organized group. Two with a trail that has little elevation gain and is only 2 miles, it would be quite easy to base camp at the beach, and go beach combing.
So lets have a Social. April 22, 23, 24 25?
Permits and Regulations.
Of course if your going to volunteer ya gotta sign up with the Coast Savers
Shi Shi beach is within Olympic National park. Hard Sided Bear cans are required by the park.
The trail to Shi Shi beach is on the Makah reservation. A $10.00 recreational use permit is required per vehicle. I already have one valid for 2011.
I have to thank our RodF for his efforts with Friends of Olympic National park, and his efforts with the Makah.
Overnight parking at the Shi Shi trail head is normally not allowed, will be allowed for clean up volunteers with special permit.
Also, wheeled travois, or game cart is approved for use on the trial. This should reduce efforts hauling stuff off the beach.

The trail to Shi Shi beach is on the Makah reservation. A $10.00 recreational use permit is required per vehicle.
Overnight parking at the Shi Shi trail head is normally not allowed, will be allowed for clean up volunteers with special permit. |
Clarifications to make things easier for volunteers:
- to camp on the beach, a bear can is not required; any hard-sided food container (for example, a 5 gallon plastic bucket with snap-on lid) will do; raccoons are the problem. link
- For Clean-up volunteers, the Makah Tribe will issue a free overnight trailhead parking permit and waives the recreational permit fee - there are no fees. Simply stop by the Makah Tribal Center (on Arrowhead Road about 4 miles west of Neah Bay, on the way to the beaches - see map) to pick up your free permit, and leave it in the car window. Tribal security will patrol the parking area over the weekend.
- Surfriders will be camping and offering a Saturday afternoon & evening BBQ at Hobuck Beach, and all volunteers are also welcome to join them. So hiking to Shi Shi and car-camping at Hobuck is also an option. FAQ
- Friends of Olympic NP are also sponsoring a clean-up of the Duk Point beaches, north of Ozette.
Please join us at either Shi Shi or Duk Point!

Yikes! I just signed up for Sand Point North again. Guess I'll miss y'all, unless anyone wants to join me down south.
ETA: Hmm, if you're going to be out there 3-4 days, I bet I can do both.

I'm certainly not opposed to camping at Hobuck camp ground if it gets a bigger group.
It's one of a few campgrounds i don't mind paying for. There's even a heated bathroom with shower!
It's still early, but i would like to see a big ass group.

Put me down for a go, I haven't been out there yet this winter. Hobuck Beach CG is one of the few I'd pay to stay too. I'm in!.....
Edit: "Beach Features:
NO overnight parking at the Makah Shi Shi Trail head. Other parking is available in town or from local residents for a fee".
This is off the Coast Savers Website. Who has the correct info?

Well Rod better get his act together. It's coming up fast!...... I see they allow free camping at the Tribal Center in Neah Bay, so why don't we all set up there? Then we won't have to pay for camping at Hobuck. Shower isn't worth $40 for me in any world when I can bring my own.

One note on Rod's information regarding not needing bear canisters: it's true you can use a hard-sided plastic container instead of a bear canister. But then it must be hung in accordance with bear hanging rules, which are very hard to achieve, IMO. And rangers do patrol, and they do give tickets, and they are not always very friendly about it, from my personal experience. Here's the full text from Rod's link:
"If your container is not a certified bear canister, it must be a hard-sided container such as a 5-gallon paint bucket with a snap-fitting lid such as those sold in hardware stores. It then must be hung at least 12 feet high and 10 feet from the nearest tree trunk 24 hours a day when unattended."
I just bought a Bear Vault BV 450 Solo just for use at the beach. It weighs 2lbs 1 oz, cost $61 with no tax and free shipping, and it saves me the hassle of going by the ranger station when they are open to borrow one of theirs, and theirs weigh 2lbs 12ozs, and are way too big for one person. I'm happier self-registering at trailheads, or making my reservations over the phone (during quota months), and I never have to go by the ranger station.
I would join this clean-up, but as usual it's on a Saturday, and I have to work. If ever anyone gets the bright idea to hold one on a Sunday some time, I'd join up for sure.
