Nice hike, getting close to warm, I bet. Did you run into,...err...I mean encounter many mountain bikers? It's a great multi-use trail.

Just the usual small crowd. A group of motorcyclists, zero hikers, and two mountain bikers on the trail and a few more in the parking lot at the end of the day.

Thanks for the memories! That's a nice summer solstice hike. We went the other way around, making it cooler for the afternoon. It's the only place I've seen lady's slippers--there was an abundance of them on the creek trail.

I've always wanted to mountain bike that! I'm sure you ran into some of that crowd, yes?

This stuff is all over the place; you'll see it all summer long. I saw an old cedar stump that was bristling with it this afternoon. The sun was low, hitting the pink stalks just right - the aqua Sauk river in the background. It was a thing of beauty. Moss so thick on that stump that I walked around barefoot for awhile. Such a sweet, sweet afternoon. But back to Devil's Gulch. I'm mildly jealous - Jim has been talking about taking me on that trip for years. It would kill me this year, but I'll do it next spring. Good for you to get such a nice trip in! up.gif

YOU GOT LEWISIA!!! up.gif dance.gif chickenleg.gif Spring IS here!!! Thanks for posting this...we were on this trail 2 weeks ago and only got as far as this creek crossing...
Cedar has never been swimming yet (as far as we know) and I didn't want this to be his first time in the water. It was definitely thigh deep in places. A few motor bikers had warned us that the water was running high and we thought they were being wimps... hockeygrin.gif If it's OK with you, here are a few of the flowers we saw when we were there.
BTW: Do you know anything about that trashed out encampment before the trailhead? Seemed a little creepy, and sad.

The more photos the merrier. Those folks live at the end of the pavement. It looks just about the same as it did on my first visit 20 years ago. That first creek crossing was above the knee, if you are 6'4", though not far across.
