Does Chicken of the Sea still make crab meat in foil pouches? There is no mention of it on their website and I haven't seen it in stores in quite a while (which was dicey even back when I know they still made it).
If they did stop making it, is there any other trail friendly way to get crab out on the trail?
Two years ago I made my father a coconut, rice, and crab dish on tortillas (from FBC I believe) while up on the high divide and he's requested I make it again for our Enchantments (or ONP coast, depending on what the snow conditions look like) trip in July.
I'd prefer no cans unless that's my only option (and I'd prefer pull top if I have to go that route).

UnfortunateLY it appears they quit making the crab and shrimp in pouches, it was awesome while they did it

Could you re-package it in your own pouch with a vacuum sealer? You would probably have to refrigerate it though and tuck it way down in your pack so it stays cold.
Does crab dehydrate?

Crab will dehydrate although YMMV on your results. Finding crab with a pop-top isn't easy either.
Be wary with repackaging, that can lead to food poisoning if not kept cold.

Darn, guess I'll have to brave opening a can the old fashioned way (with all that extra liquid ), or look for a substitution.
Thanks for the help.

Crabbing season starts in just over a week...you could process your own.

Have you tried any of the newish flavored tunas? They are really good I would add
BTW, on canned crab, the stuff at Trader Joe's is really nice - and easy to drain.

Shellfish is notorious for spoiling quickly, and spectacularly. That's the actual basis for the biblical prohibition against shellfish...
Mesquite grilled tuna packs were on sale at Safeway last week and I bought a whole pile of them. I'll have to ration them to regulate my mercury intake...
When I was 17 I went to work for a crab processer in Dutch Harbor. I ate a lot of crab for a while- it's pretty amazing stuff, fresh out of the brine. After a couple hundred pounds I didn't want any more.
Crawdads are pretty awesome. I used to pull them out of Lake Washington when I was a kid. I don't know how high up they live...it would be sorta cool if you could pull them out of the mountain lakes.
