"There is nothing wrong with America that the faith, love of freedom, intelligence and energy of her citizens cannot cure." Dwight D. Eisenhower A quote from a politician worthy or quoting!

"If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide." — Abraham Lincoln

I prefer: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist." Ike

One is a childish daydream that can lead to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood in which large chunks of the day are spent inventing ways to make real life more like a fantasy novel. The other is a book about orcs.” – “The Value of Nothing” by Raj Patel

I still like the quote... biggrin.gif

I'm pretty sure that's on the canadian $5 bill. Or was.

Quote:
The current five-Canadian dollar bill is dominantly blue in colour. The front features a portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the coat of arms, and a picture of the West Block of the Parliament buildings. The reverse side depicts children engaged in winter sports, including sledding, ice skating, and hockey; this is accompanied by a quotation from Roch Carrier's short story, "The Hockey Sweater": Les hivers de mon enfance étaient des saisons longues, longues. Nous vivions en trois lieux: l'école, l'église et la patinoire; mais la vraie vie était sur la patinoire. The winters of my childhood were long, long seasons. We lived in three places - the school, the church and the skating rink - but our real life was on the skating rink.

The 1980s newspaper clipping about this quote was unfortunately squirreled away long, long ago in a box far, far under something or other. But it's my favorite political quote of all time. Citizen of Texas, speaking to his representative: "We didn't send you to Washington to make intelligent decisions! We sent you to represent us!"

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. - Winston Churchill A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him. - Winston Churchill All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. - Winston Churchill Broadly speaking, the short words are the best, and the old words best of all. - Winston Churchill Humanity will never produce a man such as this again!

Hopefully not - more quotes from Winny The Guardian, Thursday 28 November 2002 The Churchill you didn't know Thousands voted him the greatest Briton - but did they know about his views on Gandhi, gassing and Jews... I will not pretend that, if I had to choose between communism and nazism, I would choose communism. Speaking in the House of Commons, autumn 1937 I do not understand the squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisonous gas against uncivilised tribes. Writing as president of the Air Council, 1919 It is alarming and nauseating to see Mr Gandhi, a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir of a type well known in the east, striding half naked up the steps of the viceregal palace, while he is still organising and conducting a campaign of civil disobedience, to parlay on equal terms with the representative of the Emperor-King. Commenting on Gandhi's meeting with the Viceroy of India, 1931 (India is) a godless land of snobs and bores. In a letter to his mother, 1896 I do not admit... that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia... by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race... has come in and taken its place. Churchill to Palestine Royal Commission, 1937 (We must rally against) a poisoned Russia, an infected Russia of armed hordes not only smiting with bayonet and cannon, but accompanied and preceded by swarms of typhus-bearing vermin. Quoted in the Boston Review, April/May 2001 "The choice was clearly open: crush them with vain and unstinted force, or try to give them what they want. These were the only alternatives and most people were unprepared for either. Here indeed was the Irish spectre - horrid and inexorcisable. Writing in The World Crisis and the Aftermath, 1923-31 The unnatural and increasingly rapid growth of the feeble-minded and insane classes, coupled as it is with a steady restriction among all the thrifty, energetic and superior stocks, constitutes a national and race danger which it is impossible to exaggerate... I feel that the source from which the stream of madness is fed should be cut off and sealed up before another year has passed. Churchill to Asquith, 1910 One may dislike Hitler's system and yet admire his patriotic achievement. If our country were defeated, I hope we should find a champion as admirable to restore our courage and lead us back to our place among the nations." From his Great Contemporaries, 1937 You are callous people who want to wreck Europe - you do not care about the future of Europe, you have only your own miserable interests in mind. Addressing the London Polish government at a British Embassy meeting, October 1944 So far as Britain and Russia were concerned, how would it do for you to have 90% of Romania, for us to have 90% of the say in Greece, and go 50/50 about Yugoslavia? Addressing Stalin in Moscow, October 1944 This movement among the Jews is not new. From the days of Spartacus-Weishaupt to those of Karl Marx, and down to Trotsky (Russia), Bela Kun (Hungary), Rosa Luxembourg (Germany), and Emma Goldman (United States)... this worldwide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilisation and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality, has been steadily growing. It has been the mainspring of every subversive movement during the 19th century; and now at last this band of extraordinary personalities from the underworld of the great cities of Europe and America have gripped the Russian people by the hair of their heads and have become practically the undisputed masters of that enormous empire." Writing on 'Zionism versus Bolshevism' in the Illustrated Sunday Herald, February 1920 Research by Amy Iggulden

Charlie Brown begins to wonder if he really knows what Christmas is all about, loudly asking the question in despair. Under a spotlight, Linus quotes the second chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, verses 8 through 14 from the King James Version. "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill towards men.'" "... And that's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown." Charlie Brown now realizes he does not have to let commercialism ruin his Christmas. . . . When Charlie Brown sees what they have done with the tree, he cannot believe his eyes, the kids give him a rousing "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Charlie_Brown_Christmas

"Our civilized world is nothing but a great masquerade. You encounter knights, parsons, soldiers, doctors, lawyers, priests, philosophers, and a thousand more: but they are not what they appear--they are merely masks. . . Usually, as I say, there is nothing but industrialists, businessmen, and speculators concealed behind all these masks." Arthur Schopenhauer
