so .. i'm guessing these are supposed to be taken with a dslr? but robert captured some really cool ones on our recent sw trip with his hd video camera .... we have been considering switching out to dslr .. but the weight factor with extra lenses (esp the tele) has us wondering if that would really be a better option ... anyhow

It's a tough call. is cheap now. So running the video camera for two hours to convert into a 30 second clip is not a huge deal. On the other hand battery life is an issue, how many video cams have better than two hour battery life while recording. With a DSLR it's basically on standby and not using much juice between shots. How's that vid cam handle low light and night time shots? There's advantages and disadvantages either way. I just wish i had more time to devote to time lapse shots.

night shots are not so great but he's not so much into that anyhow .. seriously though his jvc is lighter than my d90 and whimpy tele combined .. to go dslr he would be carrying a much heftier setup .. he typically only does time-lapses when we're in camp (mornings and eves) or at a lunch stop .. and not while we're on the move .. unless it is just too good to pass up ..

These are really boring, but I just got an intervalometer, so had to play with it smile.gif

My first venture into the world of time lapse... It sure helped to have someone with experience along! biggrin.gif

My friend, and resident time-lapse expert, let me borrow his Stage Zero Dolly from Dynamic Perception. It seems to be the go-to dolly for those who are serious about time-lapse. However, at ~$900 it puts it out of reach for most amateurs.

So this is the first time i shot time lapse stills in RAW. It's the obvious choice for night time shots due the flexibility of exposure corrections post process. I'm using CS5, so batch processing correction settings is no big deal. But getting from RAW (in this case my camera is natively capable of shooting Adobe DNG) to JEPG is a different story. At first i started converting to JPEG individually, since i can find no way in Photoshop to do it as a batch. But it took hours! Well i did some rummaging around the net, and discovered Adobe After Effects can natively process DNG files. Great i don't have After Effects, have Power Director 9 to process video. For kicks i decided to look at the pull down menu in Power Director to see if "DNG" was listed. It WAS! So i imported the exposure corrected DNG files to Power Director, the computer churned on it for 5 minutes but it worked. biggrin.gif I learned a few lessons. More still's/shorter interval thought out the night. It eats up storage space but there more flexibility and video quality output Youtube kills the video quality. As my time lapse skillz improve i'll be ditching Youtube. On a side note i noticed when video was processed in H.264 aka AVCHD format all shadow detail was lost, regardless of bit rate. confused.gif I find that interesting...for example gopro cams video format is H.264. Gopro cams are not know for low light performance, of shadow detail. Wonder how much of that is a result of the video compression? Firmware hack? lol.gif
