Sunrise & "Yakima Park"
Sunrise & "Yakima Park"
Just curious - sure would be nice to stay in one of those cabins.

The pavement of the roads around the cabins is still there. There were similar cabins at Paradise.

So "Yakima Park" was the camping area around Sunrise? Did the designation get dropped when they removed the cabins? I see some references to "the road to Yakima Park" sometimes & I was never sure what they meant.

It looks like a concentration camp for tourists. embarassedlaugh.gif Yakima park is marked on my TOPO! maps. It is basically the whole Sunrise area.

The footprint of the roads and paths is still in the meadows up there. Web search shows it - Link Poster child for disturbing the meadows. "Yakima Park" was a major disturbance, and the meadows have never quite recovered.

A "Park" in this context refers to a large meadow area. See: Paradise Park, Grand Park, Spray Park, Van Trump Park, Pyramid Park, Mist Park, Sunset Park, etc. The name isn't related to the cabins in any way other than that's where the cabins were situated (though perhaps the development was named for Yakima Park itself).

The original photo shows the encampment of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Ski Division. They trained on Rainier in the 1940's.

These cabins were there in the 1920's and 30's and rented to tourists - years before the 10th Mountain Division was assembled. Here's a 1930 photo by Asahel Curtis: Tourist cabins and facilities at Sunrise, Yakima Park, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, ca. 1930

I think the 10th Mountain Division's first training was at Paradise. Did they do some training at Sunrise also?
