so .. i'm guessing these are supposed to be taken with a dslr? but robert captured some really cool ones on our recent sw trip with his hd video camera .... we have been considering switching out to dslr .. but the weight factor with extra lenses (esp the tele) has us wondering if that would really be a better option ... anyhow

It's a tough call.
is cheap now. So running the video camera for two hours to convert into a 30 second clip is not a huge deal. On the other hand battery life is an issue, how many video cams have better than two hour battery life while recording.
With a DSLR it's basically on standby and not using much juice between shots.
How's that vid cam handle low light and night time shots?
There's advantages and disadvantages either way.
I just wish i had more time to devote to time lapse shots.

night shots are not so great but he's not so much into that anyhow .. seriously though his jvc is lighter than my d90 and whimpy tele combined .. to go dslr he would be carrying a much heftier setup ..
he typically only does time-lapses when we're in camp (mornings and eves) or at a lunch stop .. and not while we're on the move .. unless it is just too good to pass up ..

My first venture into the world of time lapse... It sure helped to have someone with experience along!

My friend, and resident time-lapse expert, let me borrow his Stage Zero Dolly from Dynamic Perception.
It seems to be the go-to dolly for those who are serious about time-lapse. However, at ~$900 it puts it out of reach for most amateurs.
