Those are fantastic! I would really like to get some Aurora photos at some point... Maybe even some timelapse stuff like this guy:

I tried my D600 the other night up the Teanaway and was stunned at how well it did -- much better than my D300. These two shots are a little different. The wider one is two horizontal images with a 24mm, stacked in a panorama. The other is taken with a 20mm.

It seems that the latest dslr sensors have passed a critical threshold for this sort of photography.

Agreed. Even without full-frame, the light-gathering capacity of new sensors makes it pretty easy to get quality night shots. older D80, with processing

new D7100, first attempt with this camera, almost no processing

Both pics taken in similar conditions, same tripod (gorillapod) but different lenses, which obviously is big factor too. These are 4x6 150dpi so don't show the full resolution.

If you watch Jaws backwards its the touching story of a giant shark who pukes up so many people the town is forced to build a beach.

David, the little triangle cloud in Night sky 2 adds an interesting dynamic. I like it. Here was a serendipitous moment: goat under full moon with Big Dipper.

Not necessarily hiking related (Although, I did have to hike a few dozen feet from the car), but here's my latest star shot attempt. I'm pretty happy with it!

I also had a bit of fun with a strand of battery powered xmas lights!
