I made a tour of some of the lakes in the huge basin west of Glacier Peak.GB48
The basin, and the lakes are somewhat unique in many respects- although only 5k to 6k foot elevation; they are nearly devoid of vegetation.GB49
There appears not to be a single tree within the roughly square-mile basin. This is largely due to the fact that the basin was, until recently covered by glacial ice.G-Lake45
So, it's kind of a weird place. I started calling it the Disenchantments, due to its similarity, at least in number of lakes, to the ever-popular Icicle destination. Maybe somebody else thought of the name first, anyhow the name fits pretty well. There are lots of huge boulders laying around.big-rock2 BasinCamp2 G-Lake2 G-Lake7 G-Lake-1a G-Lake55 G-Lake52 G-Lake59 G-Lake58 G-Lake63b G-Lake64 G-Lake65 G-Lake66 G-Lake69 G-Lake77 G-Lake78 GB34
Tip of the hat to Silence for recommending the camp on the ridge above Glacier Gap. The entry gate is pretty cool, if you happen to go the long way around, as I naturally did.GGcamp21 GGcamp23 GGcamp7 GGcamp6 GG55 GGcampKololoview3 GP56 GPsunset14 GPreflect19
I looped out through Blue Lake and Pilot Ridge, but got fewIH88
pictures as the weather did not fully cooperate.

Looks like I'm done. This taco stand is closing and the guy wants to shut his internet off.

One of several places I never seem to get to for one reason or another. Mostly because being the Sherpa Da It's hard to do trips of more than 3 days without a bit of help. Wish I could Zap the kinder up about 10 years in age for just a week or so. I'd even take them being 10 years younger for a week 10 years from now in trade....

Cool report of a cool area. Makes me wish I hadn't just cruised through there on my way in (and out) from Glacier Peak.

You really capture the desolate beauty of this area, so changed in just 40 years. I see the icy toe of the Whitechuck has revealed itself in the last couple weeks.

awesome. i've long wished for a nice trip up to those lakes to explore each one of them. i love the unique color of each lake. amazing what a little different glacial flour can do in such a small geographic microrange.

You look at Glacier Peak from Glacier Gap, and you think the summit is close.... but it's not!
That White Chuck Glacier (what's left of it) is pretty amazing terrain.

Great photos and report. Where is this place? I have climbed Glacier Peak many times via the easy (but now messed up by the floods) Kennedy Hot Springs - Sitkum Glacier route.
