For what it's worth, the books refered to above, A BROAD BOLD LEDGE OF GOLD, and The Coffee Chased us Up, are both available through the king county library system, along with both volumes of the "Historic Mines" books. They don't have the Three Fingers book, but the Seattle library does.

Why are coal mines so dangerous?

Coal mines are dug out of soft rock - shales, etc. whilst gold and other mineral mines are blasted out of hard rock such as igneous or metamorphic which can hold their shape for much longer. If anyone knows otherwise, just say so 'cause I'm just guessing

I remember as a kid, hiking into Monte Cristo and up to a mine a friend owned. I cant remember the name of the mine, but it was on the way up to Twin Lakes. If your headed towards twin lakes, it would be on the "Right". Good fishing up there too.... biggrin.gif Anyone have a list of the mines and who ownes/has owned them?

Cool pic. I remember packing a home built dredge up there and a chain saw winch to pull it. We dredged out the opening so water could drain. Funny thing was, a few years later some hiker packed the dredge down to the lodge saying they found an antique! LOL biggrin.gif

Sure, Sure, post the picture of the poor fat guy, wearing cotton and after he had done the face-plant in the creek. I know you took another picture without me in it but if you are having trouble finding it, here's mine. smile.gif We had a great time up there with you and the rest of the group. Also great write-up on your web site. up.gif

Anyone know who claims ownership of the Sheridan mine now? I know after a friend of mine that owned it passed on, ownership was transferred to another one of our friends with the wishes that his ashes be placed in or around the mine. Anyone have that info? toothless.gif

Monte Cristo pictures
For those interested in Monte Cristo history, here are some photos from the UW Digital Collections photo archive. The link was to a search results page and the URL truly hideous, so I got a proxy made: http://tinyurl.com/6c2cr

Was scanning through some old posts about Monte Cristo and the subject of "pies" was noted. My folks were part owners in Monte Cristo Lodge in the late 50's early 60s and yes we had homemade pies. The fellow we had working for us was a guy named George Hill who was the head of the Everett school district lunch program. He ran the concessionaire (dining hall and hamburger luncheonette) for us through the early 60's and his specialty was homemade pies. All different kinds of pies but the huckleberry in the fall were my favorite.

^ Evergreen huckleberries were ripe and plump and growing in profusion down at Pt. Defiance Park a couple weeks ago when I was down there. Tiny little things, but they make fabulous pie! wink.gif
