Fletcher and I settled on the eastern Teanaway in hopes of good weather and because we were unsure about snow conditions elsewhere. I carried snowshoes but didn't use them.
Ascending Freedom Earl Three Brothers from Freedom Navaho from Freedom Freedom summit
After 2.5 miles of the Stafford Creek trail we ascended a minor southwest ridge directly to the summit of Freedom Peak at 10:30am. Crappy loose scree was encountered on the ridge and easy scrambling just below the summit. Having a view of the next two peaks, we decided to go to Three Brothers next.
Little Annapurna Bear Tracks Navaho from Three Brothers Freedom from Three Brothers
We descended the northwest ridge to the saddle and then made our way through the upper Negro Creek drainage to the Navaho/Three Brothers saddle. The west ridge of Three Brothers was pleasant and we saw some fresh bear tracks in the snow. We came to the summit at noon. There were two register tubes, one with a rotting piece of paper signed in 1971.

We went back to the Navaho/Three Brothers saddle and then continued up to the south ridge of Navaho. This last peak was more forested and our least favorite of the three. We came to the summit just before 2 pm. All day I had been hoping that the clouds would lift from Stuart but it was not to be. Our views of the rest of the Stuart range however were quite good.

We traversed back over to the saddle north of Freedom Peak and then descended loose scree and snow to the trail far below. We got back to the car at 4:30pm.

5.5 miles on trail
6 miles off-trail

I remember it well!!
Sounds like you hiked the same route as we did, but there was lots more snow when we did it. Any day in the Teanaway is a good one.

You are using an old map. The name was changed to Etienne Creek in 2009 to honor Antoine Etienne, an early African-American resident of Washington. http://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2009/jul/10/creeks-new-name-honors-freed-slave/ From 1968 until 2009 it was called Negro Creek. Prior to 1968 it was called N!#$%& Creek which is too caustic to print. A map in my personal collection offers tangible evidence to those unenlightened years. Federal law enacted in 1968 prevents any name which is offensive to ethnic groups to be allowed on official maps of the USGS. The name N!#$%& which was on hundreds of locations in the United States was often changed to Negro. In addition to that abrasive word additional words that offended the Japanese and Italians were eliminated. The same law is used to support the First Nations who are offended by the use of the word "squaw" for various sites in the United States. Every year brings changes to geographic locations in the United States. The changes are decided by the US Board of Geographic Names. Anyone can make an appeal to the board for what they view as offensive terms. Here is a recent renaming http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/09/07/federal-board-approves-new-hampshire-town-bid-to-rename-jew-pond/

I wondered the same thing the first time I saw those. I *think* these are county line markers that have been moved around.
That's a great loop. I've done 3/4 of it twice, once clockwise and once counter-clockwise.
