I arrived at the Phelps Creek trailhead around 10:00 PM Friday night. Not a single car there. That's a first. Slept at the trailhead, and was awoken by someone else pulling in around 1:00 AM. Wow. Left my car around 7:00 AM and made it up to the Leroy Creek Basin around 9:00 AM. The weather was perfect. Most of the snow my partner and I had encountered a couple weeks earlier while doing the Carne Mountain high route had melted out. The snowhoes I was carrying were completely overkill. There was minimal snow along the trail until crossing over the saddle between Maude and Freezer Peak. Even then snowshoes weren't needed. Crampons were helpful, however. After doing a little side exploring around Ice Lakes, I made it to the summit of Maude around 2:00 PM. As I was preparing to set up my bivy spot, I saw another solo climber heading up the ridge. That was the only other person I encountered over two days. I experienced heavy wind over the night, and a little light snow. Sunday morning was mostly overcast, with on and off snow.

I am the person who came in @ 130 AM and also ran into you on Maude summit. I went directly up the giant slide gash in Leroy Basin after doing 7FJ and reached the ridge about 10-15 minutes behind you (route not recommended). You were the only person I saw as well despite it being such a nice day. Good to meet you! Here is a pic of you booting up to the summit (sort of).

Gotta say, this is a good first post. Welcome to the forum. And good on both of you!

Small world indeed! Thanks for the welcome as well Hit The Trail. I should probably write a trip report sometime instead of just lurking and getting condition information for my over ambitious adventures.

Outstanding! Especially your hiking times. It would take us at LEAST twice that long! You guys are locomotives! Nice work. Great photos! up.gif up.gif

Thanks for the report. I was wondering what the snow levels were in that area. Of course that can change daily this time of year.
