my mother asked me for advice on going cold. shes section hiking the WA part of PCT . for those who may not know what im talking about going cold is only eating food that you do not need to cook. i have never done it but i can only assume you just bring high fat and protein foods. if you have experience please fill me in.

I suggest sending a pm to : LIndsay (Marmot) PCT blog: http://marmotsadventures.com/ and, or Gabriel (Roo) Gabriel's website They both did the PCT cold in 2011, and are planning on doing the CDT cold in 2014.

I'm not always sure I like being older but being less stupid has advantages. http://www.flickr.com/photos/32121172@N00/sets/

I carried a stove on my thru-hike but some meals I'd make without firing it up. Bagels with summer sausage and sharp cheddar cheese, topped with a mustard packet, was pretty much a staple meal. It's still possible to make meals that require rehydration like noodles or potatoes. Often times I'd mix this up at lunch or an afternoon snack break, tuck it away safe in my pack, and by the time I set up camp it would be rehydrated.

While hiking Section K this past summer, I met a dude from Portland (I think) who did not use a stove. He did take salami and cheese and stuff like that, but he also used dehydrated/freeze dried stuff. He carried an empty plastic peanut butter jar which he used to rehydrate his stuff. He just didn't heat the stuff up, just ate it cold. It's like eating cold leftovers. Rumi

I've gone for days without a hot meal. Some people do dehydrated things which I personally find to be on the yucky side (most of it at least). It is definitely easier to 'go cold' in the summertime. I have used anything from MRE type meals to crackers, cheese and salami/beef jerky. I have even used stuff like Chef Boyardi ravoli or beenie weenie (canned). Even just power bars and trail mix. I know some people who would just take some fruit or veggies. Obviously some of this depends upon how long you will be 'in the wild' and what kind of room/weight limits you have. However if it gonna be cold, nothing beats hot food or at least a hot drink. Granted even when I do car camping, I go pretty basic as I hate to clean things. And I assume you/she are aware of the ultra light stoves like this--- http://www.rei.com/product/660163/msr-pocket-rocket-backpacking-stove

ramen will rehydrate in cold water with some extra time. I imagine that some freeze dried veggies added in would as well, but I haven't tried that yet. I usually do breakfast and lunch cold and just use the stove for dinner.

Veggies: dried from North Bay Trading Co. I liked carrots, spinach, and tomatoes. Mixing spinach and tomatoes really helped make the spinach palatable. Just pour some in a cup and add water before eating, start eating other stuff, and the veggies will soften in a few minutes. Carbs: I like Triscuits, but volume may be a problem; at least take the bag out of the box. Flour tortillas. Protein: string cheese, summer sausage, peanut butter balls (or nuts).

hmmm good topic actually, would need to try on short trips....BUT I think a stove does much more than just boil water, it ads a major safety and comfort factor? eating cold don't make sense to me... for the total on a canister is what one lb. with the fuel and pot?....what about alchohaul stove and fuel at 10oz.? even stove that burns twigs can weight a few ounces.. thoughts??....I hav an aluminum base to trango alch.stove that burns fuel tabs with twigs added and it worked good .....again 7-8oz total..I guess add another 2 for the GREASE POT AT K MART.... not sure I'll do it unless overnighters....in warm weather with no hail in august.....I nteresting though cause it must be a trend with some through hikers..
