CNN -- Actor Russell Johnson, best known as Professor in the 1960s TV sitcom "Gilligan's Island," died Thursday, his agent said. Johnson was 89.
Johnson played the iconic role of Professor Roy Hinkley, whose scientific schemes to get the castaways rescued were always foiled by Gilligan's bumbling.
He died at his home in Washington, where he lived with his wife, Connie. She and their daughter, Kimberly, were at his side, said agent Mike Eisenstadt. Johnson is also survived by a stepson, Court, and a grandson, he said.
I just have this nagging suspicion that as he sails the skies towards Heaven, all of a sudden he will feel a slight breeze, and then a stronger wind, and then a storm...and as he glimpses what appear to be the pearly gates they will instead turn out to be two palm trees, on a sandy island...and there on the shore will be Gilligan and the Captain, the millionaire and his wife, Ginger and Mary Ann...but I guess that would probably be Heaven.

My Russell Johnson/Professor story. About 20 years ago when the sports card market was at its peak there were sports cards shops in a lot of the local malls. Former Seahawks placekicker Norm Johnson had one in Crossroads Mall and would occasionally have some of his former teammates show up and sign autographs. One weekend Norm sponsored a sports card and memorabilia show in the mall and had a slew of former Hawks and other Seattle sports stars lined up to sign autographs during the weekend at various times.
I went there for the sports memorabilia show on one of the days and walked into Crossroads and saw this massive line of people waiting to get autographs. I couldn’t remember the schedule of which players were appearing at what time so I walked to the front of the line to see what player was commanding such attention……Dave Kreig? Kenny Easley? Steve Largent?
Nope! It was Russell Johnson, the Professor. He had just come out with a book titled “Here on Gilligan’s Isle” and was signing copies for people. His line was HUGE, the line for the Seahawks player sitting next to him (and I can’t recall who that was) had 1 or 2 people. A lot of the people had brought in coconuts for Russell to sign and when I left I walked thru the QFC at the north end of the mall and I heard one of their employees say “we’re sold out of coconuts.” LOL!
As I recall Russell was in costume as well, wearing an outfit that resembled his Professor attire from the show.
