Honda's 116mph lawnmower

Further confirmation -- as if any was needed -- of Wolffie's Theorem ("As we speak, some evil genius somewhere is thinking up something even worse"). Coming soon to a nightmare near you.

Note that the article says the engine produces "532 horsepower per ton". I've been a gear head my whole life and have never heard an engine's output expressed like that. Power to weight ratios are very important so my guess is the author of that article got a little confused about some numbers he was given. There is no way on this earth that a 1000cc motorcycle engine makes a total of 532 horsepower, and if it did they would have easily exceeded their 130mph goal. Much larger, heavier vehicles go much faster with less.

The result of this remarkable feat of engineering is a lawn mower set-up and geared to achieve a top speed in excess of 209km/h (130mph), weighing just 140kg, producing 96Nm of torque, an incredible PTW ratio of 532bhp/tonne; and an estimated 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just four seconds.
Honda Worldwide Specs be darned, though. The mower is fast enough and that is all that counts. Don't forget to wear a helmet. up.gif up.gif I mean, by the time we're done arguing we could have mowed the lawn. lol.gif

Probably not the most fuel efficient way to get to the trailhead.

Perhaps not if you take the highway, but what if you just shortcut through everyone's backyards? hmmm.gif

as long as you were mowing along the way, perhaps few of them would object.

What it amounts to is about 74bhp. The mower weighs 140kg. A "tonne" is 1000kg. Seems a bit low to me.

don't believe everything you think

Okay, so they *are* talking power/weight ratios. It doesn't seem like the math quite works out though for the power produced by the engine. While 532hp seemed incredibly high for a 1000cc motorcycle engine, 74hp is really low for such engines... 1000cc motorcycle engines are capable of making 200+ HP. I don't know why they couldn't just say how much power that particular engine produced...? I guess saying "532hp/tonne" is more impressive sounding.
