I met Jean Béliveau along a lonely stretch of the Trans Canada Highway while on a bicycle tour as he was finishing up a 75,543 Km, 11-year walk all over the world. He had visited 64 countries. The most down to earth, zen individual I've ever met.

I saw a slide show a number of years ago about Karl Bushby and Dimitri Kieffer that were independently doing a round the world walk -- without using any sort of mechanical transport -- but teamed up for walking across the pack ice of the Bering Strait. They made the crossing using skiis and sledges -- special sledges that could also work as a boat for crossing open leads in the pack ice vs walking many miles around to find a crossing. For crossing the leads they would tow the sledges while swimming in immersion suits.
Once they made the crossing and arrived in Siberia -- they spent several weeks in the local jail waiting for word from Moscow on how to deal with their unauthorized border crossing, before being deported.
Karl still hasn't been able to complete his trek -- as the Russian authorities were only granting him 90 day visas and have now banned him from entry until 2018.
