A climbing partner of mine was in the Khumbu Icefall several hundred meters below where the avalanche hit. He's safely back at basecamp, thankfully.
This is the single biggest loss of life on Everest; it looks like 16 or 17 Sherpa could be dead, which is double the loss of life in the infamous storm in 1996.
It's a dark, dark day on Everest. Sending good thoughts to those who lost their lives, their families, and those in the area.

The ferry disaster, the wars, the crazies, now this. Somedays I just gotta go home and hug my dog, and somedays even that isn't enough.
So much trouble in the world.
What you gotta do: give a little.
I was singing that old Bob Marley song last evening when the double rainbow came out.
Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.

Although it is a frivolous lighthearted parody of early 20th century climbing expeditions, The Ascent of Rum Doodle pays tribute to the work of the Sherpas in a creative and very funny way. I read it long ago, but as I recall, the European narrator ironically and unconsciously acknowledges how the native porters do all the work and all the real climbing.
This is really really sad. Maybe we should pay tribute to the Nepalese by cleaning up the mountain or something.
