My moms camping kit for us in the early 70s included that Bluetz stove in picture 10.

There are a lot of great things in the catalog. The one thing that really made me stop was the order form. 'Washington residents add 4% tax'

What a shame that REI doesn't sell lederhosen these days!

That feels a little bit like "The Whole Earth Catalog", which wouldn't come out for another 4 years. REI was definitely part of the "access to tools" movement. It's been a while since I've heard people comparing their REI numbers! What's yours Randy?

It's not that low - it's a 5 digit number

Thanks for those catalog pages - interesting stuff.
The prices seem cheap until I recall what I was earning ( good summer jobs) in 1964 - anything over $1.25/hr was good!
It was a bit of an eye-opener when I saw something that is still on my gear shelf (somewhere) in that catalog!

Thanks for posting.
Based on some U.S. Commerce Department information posted on the St. Louis Fed website it looks like the price level has increased by a factor of 5.91 since 1964. Multiply the catalog prices by 5.91 and they seem high in some cases but knives appear to have been a good deal back then. Or divide today's prices by 5.91 to get a basis for comparison.

I still have an REI McKinley sleeping bag, two Cruisers, and there's probably two or three of those old model ice axes around here someplace, too. I still use one of them.

Really cool catalog. Thanks for scanning and posting, Schroder.

I joined in 67 but lots of those items were still there then, feeling old

The McKinley bag. If I'd had another $15 in my meager bank account back when I was in 5th grade, I would have bought one. As it was I bought a less expensive one at Jonas Brothers.

I still have one of those McKinley sleeping bags.
I thought I had a low REI membership number but when they opened the store last year in Silverdale the Central Kitsap Reporter said member number 25 lives in the area.

I was born in 64, and my dad's number was 3700-something. So we had quite a bit of that gear around the house. My mom had one of those Nordic-style sweaters, and Dad had one of those Cowichan ones (plus hat).
I'm pretty sure I rode around in the Kelty combination kid carrier/car seat. Amazingly, I survived.

Interesting how the prices in Schroder's 1964 REI catalog haven't changed much, factoring in inflation.
Using this inflation calculator:
Page 15, "English Ventile Parka" $27.95 - (2014 equivalent price $212.92)
Page 27, "Co-op Eiger" ice ax $13.95 - ($106.27)
Page 36, "Todi" boots $29.95 - ($228.15)
Page 40, "Camper" tent $69.50 - ($529.44)
