http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2014/03/google-could-greatly-improve-weather.html?m=1 I read Cliff Mass's latest blog with great skepticism, thinking it was pretty naive in the age of privacy issues. And a great idea, I hope it comes to pass but doubt it will. So am I too cynical?

Not with Google. Anything like this should be opt-in only and Google only does opt-out, if there is any sort of 'opt' available. (donning my foil hat)...IMO, Google is well on the way to becoming SkyNet. They collect far too much personally identifiable information collected for my comfort. I even switch my default search engine to duckduckgo.

If not now, when?

If there is money to be made, Google would sell its soul as well as yours.

I would share that data if I had confidence that it would only be used for weather forecasting purposes. I don't trust Google to not expand the use of my data at some point if they think they can make money off it.

The real tin foil hat question is: Do you have a choice? Short of abandoning your smart phone entirely.

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Somewhat, but it ain't easy; read "Dragnet Nation."

Dutch student sells online soul at auction for €350
Quote:
There are those who so loathe to have their personal data milked for profit (or other, potentially more sinister purposes, such as identity theft or surveillance) that they up and divorce Google. Many privacy-minded people likewise eschew Facebook. Then, there's Shawn Buckles: the kind of guy who puts his personal data up for auction to the highest bidder. Buckles, a Dutch student and artist, had his data soul up for sale for a few weeks, during which time he received 53 bids, according to Wired. On 12 April, the auction ended, with The Next Web (TNW) having placed the winning bid of €350 ($483, £287). Specifically, he sold the following buckets of personal data: His "personal profile" Location records Train travel records Personal calendar Email conversations Online conversations Social media conversations Consumer preferences Browser history His "thoughts" The sale was meant to prove a point about loss of privacy in the age of big data.

What sinister misuses are there in knowing the barometric pressure where peoples' phones are? I would opt in.

Because you have to also share your location data in order for it to work. As long as that location data is never shared with any other data collection programs, there is no misuse. Given that Google and it's brethren in the online world have made it their mission to make money off their customers data, I don't trust that my data won't get shared.

By they already have the location data from your phone in all likelihood. This would just turn it into something useful to the public, improved weather forecasts especially for short term events like storms and even tornados in the Midwest. To be clear I don't think the idea has wings although I'd support it personally. It makes a great window into the public's evolving sense of privacy though, so a good discussion.
