I think you are bang-on there Wolfie. I notice it as I get bit by mosquitoes or black flies but not at all afterwards. Horsefly bites can swell and itch for 2-3 days. Gnats are a different story. About 20 years ago I went to Mono Lake to photograph the sunrise. There were tiny gnats but I really didn't notice them biting me…..until later that day. For the next 7 days or so I itched like crazy with about 40 bites, mostly on my scalp.. Something in my immune system.
