The hermit of North Pond camped out in Maine for 27 years, supporting himself by burglarizing local cabins. A weird and fascinating story... Hermit of North Pond-GQ Article

Huh. Fascinating. I can't believe no one found him in almost 3 decades. I also find it interesting that he maintained his linguistic ability and vocabulary through reading and listening to the radio. I find it amazing that "Everybody Loves Raymond" topped his list of guilty pleasures. Sounds more like torture to me! It seems incredible that nobody looked for him from his family. Or at least, that's what the article implies (though not from first hand discussion).

There was a similar story some years ago outside of Darrington. There's a small community of vacation cabins to the west of Darrington that the Washington hermit was repeatedly raiding. That all ended when police tracked him down and one of their dogs pretty much chewed his foot off.

Also The Ridgerunner from Idaho.

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

There are a lot of people nobody would notice missing. If I were gone there are a few that might give it a passing thought, but nobody would look for me or anything. Maybe that is unusual, but Id rather think its not.

Quote:
Isn't everybody, he said, seeking the same thing in life? Aren't we all looking for contentment? He was never happy in his youth—not in high school, not with a job, not being around other people. Then he discovered his camp in the woods. "I found a place where I was content," he said. His own perfect spot. The only place in the world he felt at peace.
To most of us he seems weird, but the above quote shows that he's just like everyone in some ways. Thanks for posting this excellent story.

Forgot about that part. And arson here in the US too maybe? Some kind of trouble here.

Yes arson here, I think in Shoreline he burned his former residence after the landlady booted him out.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
