Did a family trip to Johnston Ridge observatory on St Helens last Sunday (unfortunately our dog had to stay home...). it's been over 20 years since we last visited the North side (went to Windy Ridge then). There are a lot of tall trees along the road; once you are at the center, you still see bare slopes with decaying trees, but much greener. We hiked a loop trail up to Harry's Ridge ~9miles-rt, and really enjoyed it.

The crater!
Very interesting and educational hike, highly recommended for those geologically inclined. More pics here.

Stunning. I like the contrast of the volcano scarred terrain to the bright wildflower close-ups.

Interesting in that last picture how the river has already sculpted badlands-like topography in only 30 years. I also wonder how all those ant hill formations came to be.

Excellent place. I was there for the last few days riding my motorcycle. Spent the night at windy ridge watching the stars after bust of a sunset. Awoke to ride to hike the Ape cave, and Lave canyon. Then off to Johnston ridge. Had dinner on the side of a trail then home. Always a fun place.
