The level of irrational fear, anthropocentrism, and unabashed selfishness on this website full of supposed "outdoorsmen" is truly appalling.

I joined this site after a long period of lurking, during which time I mainly just read trip reports. I expected that based on the fact this this website is intended mainly for hikers that I would be joining a community of environmentally sensitive individuals, after all, I thought- how could anyone who has spent any time in the wilderness not be? I assumed that I would soon be participating in many thoughtful and enlightening discussions.
Man was I ever wrong.
I take solace in the fact that the irrationally fearful, anthropocentic, and selfish people here are actually in the minority, they just have really big mouths.

I really don't want to be backpacking through country that's saturated with grizzly bears. But I don't think that's the most important cconsideration. Those are wild mountains, already home to 2 or 3 of the only grizz outside the Rockies in the lower 48, andhistorically grizzly country. They belong there, we aren't talking about Disney Land.

Put on a bear bell. Be careful where you walk downtown, though.

Yeah, Griz in the Sierra, like there were are few in the old days, would do much to slow down the masses wandering in my favorite places.
Course most of those old time "golden bears" made a living at lower elevations...much like current homo sapien animals.

I encountered a woman with bear bells the other day in North Cascades NP, so you're already not entirely safe from them here in WA.

You know there are MANY attacks of humans by domestic dogs every year in this country, including some fatalities. Where is the hysteria and fear mongering over domestic dogs? It's selective outrage, and it's ridiculous. Your chances of being attacked by a grizzly bear are very slim. Man up people.

Especially if you are where the Grizz are not.

Quote: | There are more people killed by DEER than by lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and sharks combined |
I've survived a couple of assassination attempts by sinister wayward ungulates. I escaped unscathed on both occasions, although the vehicles were bruised, bloodied and never quite the same. The deer were not so lucky, and despite the fact that they nearly got me, I can't help but feel a terrible sadness regarding their violent ends.
But even after these near-fatal experiences, and knowing precisely how dangerous the deer can be, I am still far, far more terrified by the prospect of an encounter with a grizzly.
And yet I agree that they belong here. Bring 'em on!
Might be smart to do conditioned releases like they do with the big cats. Treat them mean and shoot them in the a$$ with bean bags as they come out of the cage; in order to instill a fear of humans. Sorta nasty, but better overall for both species in the long run (if the technique actually works).
As far as I know, nobody's been eaten by wolves yet. Which is sort of an encouraging sign...

That is certainly irrefutable logic.
