Ok, this one is really a stretch to include in a hiking related forum (but it IS in a mountain town...), but I'm wondering if someone here might have an answer to a strange question:
What is an ocean-going sized ship's screw doing in Butte, Montana? I asked a couple shop owners, and they had no idea...
Ship's Screw
I *really* hope someone here has an answer....

I can't remember where I read this, but the inland ocean use stretch in quite a ways, and ships would frequently sink after being dashed against the hoodoos in the continental divide. Finally a lighthouse was built in Anaconda. Later as the inland waters receded, the lighthouse was converted into the Anaconda smelter, which is now a state park.
You will still find propellers and anchors scattered about, and the hardy Butte miners have used the propellers, such as that in the photo, to mix large Margaritas.

That seemed to be somewhat plausible, but according to Wikipedia (yeah, I know...but so far that's the only reference I have), both were sunk as target ships:
..."Butte was sunk as a target off the east coast of the United States using Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles and a Mark 48 torpedo fired from USS San Juan. Coincidentally, the previous USS Butte was also sunk deliberately in 1948 after use as a target ship in Operation Crossroads." ...
I love exploring the mountains and wondering about the sometimes strange things I find there (a week ago I saw a pickup down maybe 100' below a trail, looked to have been there for maybe 30 years), and the things I read about here that others have discovered, but so far, this one is the most unusual.
So, onward....

Did the glacial lake that carved the Grand Coulee area when the ice dam broke back up as far as Butte? Unfortunately the timing is a little off for large ships motoring around the lake...

It only takes one winter to realize how screwed you are to live there.

Riverside, props to you for posting, but I'm worried that if someone from Butte reads it, they will be completely torqued off. Of course, winter hasn't arrived yet so they may not fathom what you are talking about.

From the title I thought this would be about dams on top of a mountain in MT.
