I just took my Sony RX100 in for repair. On the 2nd day of a month in the desert the lens wouldn't extend. Luckily it was my back-up camera so I just crossed my fingers that my NEX-7 didn't also go on the fritz. Guy at Ken's Camera in Everett said it was the 3rd P&S (not all this model) brought in today with the same problem! Most common cause is camera inadvertently getting turned on in the case, then the lens continues trying to extend until it wears out the little plastic gears that do so. Only answer we could come up with would be a hard shell case (which I might look into, but I loved the easy access of the little Sony case made to fit my camera).
