There are two instant coffees that I find better than tolerable: Medaglio d'Oro instant espresso Mt. Hagen, a German brand that I first encountered in, of all places, Turkey. Many US health food stores carry it.

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view.--E.Abbey

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CPD1I4M/ref=pd_aw_sims_1?pi=SS115&simLd=1 I am a big fan of Jacobs, I like cream and sugar in my coffee so this is a quick option.

After trying the Colombian (the only variety Costco stocks, unfortunately), I concluded that Starbucks Via was terrible, and used Medalia d'Oro instant espresso for a few years. Then I took a flyer on the Italian Roast Via and found it to be *much* better. Grocery Outlet stocks it at times. I now bring it on backpacks with some Nido powdered milk (being a cream but no sugar type).

If you think instant tastes like coffee then you haven't been drinking "real" coffee. Weight isn't even an issue. Just grind and bring. Add water. What's the big deal. Why buy expensive brown stain? If your god-given equipment (teeth) doesn't appeal it isn't rocket science to separate the grounds from the brew . Although looking at the plethora of gadgets out there vying for your ˘$ŁĄ€ one might think otherwise.
