Forest Trails and Highways of the Mt. Hood Region
Oregon National Forest, 1920, USDA Circular 105.
The Columbia River Highway opened in 1915. In July 1916, Eagle Creek Campground (the first developed campground built by USFS anywhere in the US) opened. USFS issued a brochure that year noting that Eagle Creek campground was manned, but no trail existed up Eagle Creek but was planned. Hikers were encouraged to continue 6 miles up to view several falls, the last one "spouting out of rock". The trail was completed in 1919.
Also in 1919, the old Barlow toll wagon road became a public Mt. Hood Loop Road, making the east side of Mt. Hood accessible to the public.
This delightful 32-page 1920 guidebook celebrates the new Eagle Creek Trail with a two-page description and a detailed three-page trail log. "The Eagle Creek Trail is one of the costliest and best mountain trails in the West. For thousands of feet it has been cut through solid rock, and in one place goes behind a waterfall through a tunnel cut into the mountain."
The guidebook includes two larger foldout maps.

Future trails:
Only a fragment of the Timberline Trail encircling Mt. Hood appears in this 1920 map; it will be proposed in 1932, and construction started in 1933.
The Oregon Skyline Trail (future Pacific Crest Trail) route from Crater Lake to Government Camp was scouted in 1920, and the first complete map of its initial route would appear in 1921. A map of the completed trail (with many new, re-routed, sections) would appear in 1936, and it would then include the eastern Timberline Trail to Eden Park, then Lost Lake, Wahtum Lake and down Eagle Creek to the Columbia River.
These trails are highlighted in an updated version of this guide, Mt. Hood Recreation Guide No. 41, which appears in 1936.
