Hiker fun fact. The photo above is of a real campsite and the ancient trail on the hill beyond can be seen to this day: The Nez Perce Celilo Falls Trail. The metal figures of men are of the Corps of Discovery preparing to camp for the evening. The man in the right-center is a depiction of John Colter, a hunter for the group who carries a rifle. Later in the journey John Colter would go back into the Rocky Mountains to trap beaver and perhaps become the first known (white) backpacker of the west, along with discovering upper Yellowstone Country.
Quote: "In 1807, Colter joined Manuel Lisa's newly formed Missouri Fur Company on an expedition to the Rocky Mountains. That winter, Lisa sent Colter out to all the winter Indian camps to alert them of his presence and desire to trade. Alone, with only his rifle and a 30lb pack, Colter traveled an estimated 500 miles that winter.."
