Hey folks, not sure if you all do the newb intro thing but here is one anyway. I am a long time backpacker but took nearly 15 years off after college and during the beginning of raising a family. That and other hobbies intruded into the little free time I had.
With my kids now entering their teens I've felt a call back to the hills and I want to share that with them. We've been on a number of day hikes around the area but it doesn't replace a trip into the back country with your house on your back and nothing but marmots for neighbors.
My son and I are planning for a trip on the Wonderland in 2016, provided we can get a permit and we'll be using the time in between to plan shorter hikes and get used to backpacking again.
What drew me to this forum was a search result as I was researching McHale packs. My good backpacking buddy growing up had a McHale which I got to use a few times and the difference between that and my Gregory pack was apples and oranges. I won't be backpacking without some kind of custom pack and so far McHale leads my short list.
Anywho, looking forward to looking around the forum.
Cheers,
Ted

Welcome to the forum Ted. Glad to hear you are getting the teens out. I wish you luck on your overnight excursions. Summer will come early this year so lots of chances for backcountry sleeps.

Welcome aboard. I was like you as well where I didn't do much for 15+ years but since moving up here the mountains have called. My older son though doesn't want to camp (he had enough in Scouts). but my younger son likes to (just doesn't like hiking 6+ miles to a site).
In any case, Cheers!

Yes welcome. And yes, get the McHale.
I started taking my nephew out at 3 years old. Now he's 13 and looks forward to hiking with me every summer. Just a note of caution, if your kids haven't been exposed to hiking you might think of some smaller day hikes first. Over time progress to longer harder day hikes. Ive known more than a few people burn their kids out the first couple times taking them to long (days) to far and to hard in the beginning.

Welcome to the forum! Great to hear that you're introducing your kiddo to backpacking. I would agree with Bpacker Joe. I took it easy with my kiddos when they were young with easy hikes. Now in their late teens and early twenties, they insist on backping each summer. They even drag their boyfriends along!
The members of this forum are a great resource.

Thanks all. I am definitely aware of the burn factor with kids, too many rainy, fishless days on the river nearly turned my son off to fishing in the early days. 2015 will be the year of reintroduction to hiking and backpacking, starting slow and working our way up to more challenging hikes.
I have found that a juicy burger, fries and a milkshake at the end of a long day is motivation enough for my kids, most of the time...
