gb, I lucked out in Goblin Valley that night - there was a small campfire in an alcove reflecting off the walls opposite those rocks that provided just enough illumination. In some of these shots I used my headlamp to light paint the rocks, but had to do many attempts - with a 2.8 lens and high ISO it was very easy to overexpose. On a number of these I ended up underexposing the rocks in post to make it look a bit more realistic (although black silhouettes are the real view).

Artist point a couple weekends ago. 60% moon high in the sky, not the best for stars.

jim, how did you get the stars during evening (not night) light? did you stack images or something more advanced?

Iron, not sure which shot you are talking about. Devil's Garden Sunset is just a straight shot, and the others were illuminated with a headlamp. I have tried some stacking though with limited success.

Iron, one of my favorites of the trip - shot late into dusk. It actually looked quite dark, but typical of star shots with modern digital cameras the 25 sec. exposure at 2.8 really brought out the last light and color in the sky, much more than the eye could see. I'd love to say I planned it exactly that way, but it was experimental luck to a certain extent.

hmm. not sure what i'm doing wrong then. i set to 25 sec, f/2.8, and iso 3200-6400. i never get that kind of brightness. i'm just a hack though --- if you take 10000 pictures, at least 1 will be okay

Alabama Hills & Lone Pine Pk.

The full moon bummed me a bit (blew out the Milky Way) when my wife and I were on our Death Valley trip, but I tried to work with it. I'm pretty happy with this one where the moonlight illuminated the giant granite boulders and Lone Pine Pk. in the background.
