Wow, At least one full curl ram grazing next to I-84 near John Day river bridge on Wed. April 9 about noon. I was WB, saw a car pulled over EB, and there was a guy photographing a small herd right next to EB below the basalt column cliffs. I wanted to turn around and have a look myself but long way between exits in that country. Are those guys native to that area? PS: This is Rocky Mtn. Bighorn Sheep. Not mtn. goats. Tom

I've seen them a number of times, I think they must often hang out beside the freeway at the Eastern end of the Columbia Gorge.

They were getting hit so often on the highway north of Wenatchee, that they put up a giant fence: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/US97A/WildlifeFence/photos.htm (Looking across the Columbia to Orondo in #2 pic)

That fence was a problem at first. As I seem to recall they were "sneaking" around it and still getting on to the highway. Are things better now? Game fence btw. Giant fence? Tall perhaps but deer can jump a game fence if they can run along side it and have seen them do so.

Desert Bighorns are a subspecies of Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep and seem to be smaller than those in the Rockies. They were extirpated from many states but have been re-introduced, including in Eastern Washington. All the news that's fit to print: http://www.defenders.org/bighorn-sheep/basic-facts I saw Desert Bighorns twice last week in Eastern Washington.
