More Northwest Forest Plan listening sessions planned. SOON! Mt. Vernon - April 23rd, Issaquah Apr 28th. And more. I went to the session at SEATAC in March, but I'll probably attend the April 28th one as well. (they don't offer cookies though) Recall that the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan, which put protections in place for the old growth ecosystem, was signed to amend the Forest Management Plans. Because the Forest Management Plans that were in place at the time are due (overdue actually) for revision, the Northwest Forest Plan will not follow as an amendment. Our job (the public) is to let the USFS know how we want the Northwest Forest Plan components to be addressed. At this point, I want as much of the NWFP to remain as possible, but I'm still mulling about it. This will surely be a very long process. The 20 year monitoring report will be presented in Portland on June 4th. (anyone want to come with me?)

Have they written a primer or outline of what they are saying at these meetings to read up on if we can't make it?

Mt. Vernon is a ways. Issaquah I can probably do, but what's the "Olympic" one also shown for the 28th? (Location just says "Olympic") huh.gif Portland on the 4th? Hmmm..... yeah... I could do that maybe. What time? That's a Thursday. Lot of driving. (I'll call Olympia tomorrow and get the info on the "Olympic" one on the 28th - my main areas of focus are primarily ONF and GPNF.)

Well these are the same as the one you and I attended in March. They're just adding these so the more rural communities have a chance to participate. Short notice though; jeez. Even for the one in March. I had no problem taking time off work to get there, but some folks might have a more rigid vacation request requirement from their employer. I'll attend the one in Issaquah; can't hurt to go again, just to get more information! Mu guess is the venues will be announced later. The Press Releases from the local forests haven't been sent out yet (at least MBS hasn't sent theirs yet. This was on the Region 6 site on the 10th).

There will be plenty of time to get involved; there's no primer, really (but see below KUOW link) and results won't be coming out for quite some time. KUOW had a good overview of the Northwest Forest Plan last week and provides links to the NWFP monitoring site, and talks about what this revision is all about. It's a format similar to the recent Sustainable Roads format - there's a presentation about the Northwest Forest Plan and why it's important to deal with it now, and then folks wander around to different tables and bainstorm answers to a few questions. Someone writes 'em up on a flip chart, the flip chart goes back to headquarters to be analyzed. I'm guessing this process will be years in the making. But go if you can so the USFS knows we're out here. One forest has already grappled with what to include and what not to include on their new plan, and there was such outcry about NWFP components being changed around that they scrapped the whole planning process.

most recent update - 04/24/15 - Eastern Washington Friday, April 24, 2015 4:49 PM U.S. Forest Service to Hold Forest-Level Listening Sessions Forest Service responds to desire for more Forest Plan Revision Listening Sessions Wenatchee, Wash. April 23th — The Pacific Northwest (OR, WA) and Pacific Southwest (CA) Regions of the U.S. Forest Service are beginning a public conversation on the process for revising forest land management plans in the Northwest Forest Plan amendment area. The land management plans within the Northwest Forest Plan area guide how resources will be managed for 15 to 20 years. These plans are due for revision. “We promised to evaluate the need for additional Forest-level listening sessions,” said Jim Peña, Pacific Northwest Regional Forester. “We heard a strong desire for more sessions, so we’re holding the next round at local forest locations to further our commitment to engaging with and listening to the concerns of our communities.” The Forest Service is currently in the pre-plan revision stage and is holding listening sessions to begin sharing information with the public and gathering feedback on things like how you would like to be engaged in plan revisions. Public feedback will be incorporated in different ways depending on the phase of plan revision. The Forest Service held a series of preliminary listening sessions last month in Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; and Redding, CA. The Forest Service is now holding additional public listening sessions throughout Washington State. The purposes of the sessions are to: Share our current thinking on plan revision, Share how science will inform the process, and Listen to ideas and thoughts about how to approach public engagement for forest plan revisions on each National Forest. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will host a Listening Session in Wenatchee, WA on May 5, 2015, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 121 N. Wenatchee, WA 98801 in the Orchard Exhibit North room. Onsite parking is available. http://www.wenatcheeconventioncenter.com/ Other Region 6 Forest will be hosting additional listening sessions over the next few weeks. Specific locations and times will be announced by each Forest as their plans are finalized, and posted on forest and region websites at http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r6/landmanagement/?cid=stelprd3831710

Let us know how it went, Pyrites! I may attend the Issaquah session tomorrow, though I already attended one. It can't hurt!

Why no weekend sessions? At the minimum, it is a 2 hour drive on a work night to attend a meeting for the people who were affected the most by the original plan.

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities
