Ghastly because you can't decide whether to shell out $300 for the print?
I assume this is the same L. Lindsley whose name is scratched on the rock below Chikamin Peak? I was up there a week ago and saw the names, but they are getting pretty faint now. The dates on the rock (1898) and the photo (1900) suggest it's the same person.
FWIW, I have a very similar photo taken around 1910 in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, of my grandfather standing with a shotgun on a "heap" of dead bears.

What I found ghastly is the pictures for sale from the same guy.. concentration camp victims..WTF.
I sorta like the old time photograph with the hunters and the bear. People hunt animals.. the photo was not gruesome in the least bit.

I have to admit...I was expecting something actually ghastly...I might have to look that word up and see what it means....
I wouldn't consider one rifle and a buck knife armed to the teeth myself either...
