Wednesday, August 31, 2005 By TERENCE CHEA THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO -- California, New Mexico and Oregon sued the Bush administration Tuesday over the government's decision to allow road building, logging and other commercial ventures on more than 90,000 square miles of the nation's remaining pristine forests. In the lawsuit, attorneys general for the three states challenged the U.S. Forest Service's repeal of the Clinton administration's "roadless rule" that banned development on 58.5 million acres of national forest land, mostly in the West. "The Bush administration is putting at risk some of the last, most pristine portions of America's national forests," California Attorney General Bill Lockyer said. "Road building simply paves the way for logging, mining and other kinds of resource extraction." In January 2001, President Clinton put almost one-third of the nation's 192 million acres of national forest land off-limits to road construction, winning praise from conservation groups and criticism from the timber industry. Those roadless areas included more than 6,800 square miles in California, about 2,500 square miles in New Mexico and nearly 3,000 square miles in Oregon. In May, the administration replaced the regulation with a new policy requiring states to work with the Forest Service to decide how to manage individual forests. Governors were given 18 months either to petition the agency to keep their states' forests protected or to open the undeveloped areas to roads and development. Mark Rey, an Agriculture Department undersecretary, called the suit "unfortunate and unnecessary."

Ok, so what. Klinton locked up everything. Why wasn't that seen as radical and bad? WE NEED WOOD PRODUCTS! Why is that so hard for some of you to understand? So Bush has opened up some areas. Get over it and feel good that you'll have something soft to wipe your butt with. Sheesh.

not sure how specifically discussing the content of the article is making it "political", exactly. Forests should be managed as multiple use, IMO. This means if resources are there to be extracted, it's perfectly acceptable to manage them to accomplish this. Personally, I don't agree with judging resource access by "shortage", if someone can move marketable timber to market on a non subsidized basis, have at it. Same goes for mining. this move is one I agree with in principle, and discussing a govt move on forests on a hiking website seems reasonable to me.

interesting you'd use that as something unusual, when it has historically been NO's luck when it comes to *avoiding* hurricane damage for quite some time. but then, making the normal seem unusual is all part of that particular game.

Who the heck are you anyways? Global warming is in no way a fact. That's absurd! Twenty years ago the issue was the next ice age! I remember conversations about it. So you're some how relating hurricane Katrina with global warming? Well then you're not the rational intelligent person I thought you were. As if a hurricane in this area is an anomaly? Oh brother.

Well lets see, cut funds to repair levee in New Orleans, spend the money for the "Noble Cause" in Iraq. Deny Global warming in spite of melting of alpine glaciers in the NW, Breakup of West Antartic ice sheet and opening of northwest passage for the first time in a thousand years. Increased intensity of hurricanes is well known byproduct of global warming. Gulf water temp 90 degrees F. Not breakoff Crawford vacation because afraid of dead vets mom.

C'mon guys. Try to stay on topic. I'm not sure what global warming or hurricanes has to do with roadless areas. And use a spell checker. It will make your arguments sound more intelligent. wink.gif
