The trailhead (4200 ft) is located at the end of the North Fork Teanaway River road…
Follow the Ingalls Way trail 3 miles to Ingalls Pass (6500 ft)… from the pass lose and regain 200 feet of elevation as you contour northwesterly around and/or through Headlight basin and reach Ingalls Lake (6463 ft) in 1.5 miles…
From the lake we headed west for the saddle between the north and south peaks of Ingalls… the route to the saddle started on easy-to-travel rock slabs… two-thirds of the way up we worked our way through large boulders and reached the talus gully leading to the saddle (estimate 7350 ft) which holds the “Dogtooth”… the final approach to South Ingalls Peak is from the west side of the saddle, first losing 100 feet of elevation before reaching the 7640 foot summit…
From the South Ingalls summit we traversed the ridge connecting South Ingalls and Fortune Peak… there is 100 feet of class 3 down-climbing when leaving the summit… and while traversing the ridge we did encounter two places where our rock climbing ability (or lack thereof) pushed us off the ridge on its east side, where we worked around the steep rock and then returned to the ridge to reach the summit of Fortune (7382 ft).
From the Fortune summit we turned east… following the ridge towards Ingalls Pass for a quarter mile before dropping down to “Lake Camp Fire Girls”… from the lake we continued easterly and reconnected with the trail 400 feet below Ingalls Pass… then retraced our steps back to the trailhead…
It was very windy at Ingalls Pass, Ingalls Lake, and along the ridge between South Ingalls and Fortune… and the wind made it very chilly… one camper at Ingalls Lake said that it was 35 degrees the night before… also, Lake Camp Fire Girls is bone dry and Lake Ann isn’t much better off…
