Many of the rural communities are literally dying because their economy was based on supplying raw materials to the urban areas, and the industry located there. What is not mentioned in the article is that we cannot afford to import all the foreign resources we use, as evidenced by our trade imbalances. Furthermore, congress is responding to the crys for help from such communities as Packwood, Wa, where schools closed last year. The health of such a community is important to the hiking folks because it provides a place to base out of and obtain supplies.
Meanwhile, the Audubon Society is trying to prevent the repair of Mountain Loop Rd, which is used by hikers to get to trails in that area:

I just wonder if the result of this might be not more mining and use of natural resources but large real estate developments for second or third homes in the mountains. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Same thing was tried on the Middle Fork. A lawyer in Wenatchee bought the claim on Labohn gap for a couple K and said he would sell it to the FS for $1,000,000 else he would build a McMahnsion up there and not allow any hikers in unless they paid $$$. Sad thing is the proposed law does not allow new claims only the patenting of old ones. So you could not make an "access claim" to get a gate key.

No kidding. Anyone noticed that massive McHunting lodge next to the Lake 22 trail? They have bison grazing in the fields there. Probably one of Pombo's summer retreats.

Wow! Someone's way ahead of me. I was thinking of doing the same thing on the Miner's Ridge access to Image Lake.
But really! Don't you think this (LaBohn Gap purchase) was probably a stunt done by sneaky environmentalists to discredit the progressive privatization advocates among us?
