I used to have a lot of respect for Ed Viesturs but started losing it when I saw his cameo appearance in this crappy movie. Now I see him pimping his name for almost every product under the sun in magazine adds and I have no respect left for him.

Vertical Limit is a relative documentary or how-to! Relative to Sub-Zero anyway dizzy.gif Sub-Zero was so cheezy, I nearly cried from laughing so hard. ADDED: To be fair, I'm actually considering buying it though smile.gif MORE ADDED (Can't resist): One great line goes "I haven't seen him since the Fuji climb." rotf.gif

you're thinking of cliffhanger, stallone wasn't in vertical limit.... both movies were pretty bad. i remember an old movie that was filmed in darrington, same type of thing except the climbers were stranded on whitehorse. i don't remember the name of it, but it wasn't a bad flick.

Love the movie vertical limit - its wall to wall laughs. The 'leap of faith' with the ice tools is standard action movie fare - what I really like are the subtle absurdities: The night before the climb they stay up late drinking beer in front of a massive bonfire (impressive considering the altitude). They start the climb after dawn and appear to be doing the summit as one long day hike. The 'rescue' itself would go on record as the worst ever. To save 1 person they manage to kill all but two members of the rescue team. The main culprit is the highly volatile nitro (kept in leaky containers of course) which IIRC was supposed to 'blow away' the snow caused by the avalanche. Not sure how this was supposed to work since you would think explosions would cause more avalanches. Then when they find them in the crevasse EVERYONE has to get on the rope at the same time and they have only a couple anchors. No wonder my grandmother thinks hiking is dangerous.

stupid but fun. it's so bad it's worth it to watch it. stupid from stem to stern. just how is it so much nitro is always around in these movies? criminy, don't the Paks or Indians or whoever have any hand grenades? Something with a fuse would be nice. the bonfire is a great catch, the whole basecamp area looks like a himalayan ski bum frat kegger for that scene.

as much as i dislike stallone, cliffhanger is better trash than vertical limit. the only crappy mountain movie i've actually seen where their packs actually look like they weigh something was K2. in both cliffhanger and vertical limit, people put on their packs and take them off like there's nothing in them. go figure. if you have a real pack, you have to get some body english going to get the darned thing on. or off.

I liked the movie K2 and actually have the DVD. The acting sucks but the scenery is great. Everyone is wearing TAIGA outdoor clothing in the movie because it filmed up here in BC. biggrin.gif I think my all time favorite climbing movie has still got to be the Eiger Sanction.
