Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you.

From the Simpsons episode "The Frying Game" where Homer thoughtfully surprises Marge with a gift of a koi pond for their backyard only to discover a screaming insect among the lily pads. Deciding the poor creature is hurting, Homer moves to put it out of its misery, only to be confronted by an EPA official:
Quote: | Lisa: What was that?
Screamapillar: Argghh, arghhh!
Homer: What the hell is that noise?
Lisa: That caterpillar is screaming
Homer: Aww, the poor thing’s in pain. What he needs is a visit from kindly old Dr. Foot [rears back on one foot preparing to stomp the insect, only to be confronted by a man sliding out from behind a tree].
EPA official: Hold it right there Dr. Foot! You’re about to kill an endangered species – the screamapillar [rubs screamapillar lovingly], which has chosen your yard as its home.
Homer: Fine! I won’t kill it… [stage whispering to Lisa] finish the job.
EPA official [clearly annoyed]: Mr. Simpson, allowing an endangered species to die is a federal offense, under the Reversal of Freedoms Act of 1994. You are now legally responsible for the safety and well-being of this screamapillar!
Lisa: [reading broshure] Without constant reassurance, the screamapillar will die...it's sexually attracted to fire...
Homer: Are you sure God doesn't WANT it to die? |

Oh come now! We in this forum are too politically incorrect to pretend to worry about such things.

Whether or not you believe the situation is as dire as that article would lead you to believe, it is undeniable that humanity is on an unsustainable path right now.
We can't deforest forever, we can't pump oil forever, and believe it or not we can't flush our toilets with 2 days worth of drinking water forever. The world contains finite resources and the 6 billion humans on it are making a big dent in those resources much more quickly than they are being replaced.
Thanks for the link UGH.

25% seems like a huge dent in the food chain. Could the remaining life survive this? If this is as close as 50 years away, I would be curious to see the list of the thousand or so species that has already died off in the last few years. Is such a list being kept?

Well polar bears are pretty much at the top of the food chain, even higher than a human being (without a gun), so if this guy is right and 20% of my menu disappears, I may be eating off the McDonald's dollar menu next summer, and maybe even little of that. It may be a burger without lettuce and tomatoes, or maybe a burger without two all beef patties, or maybe two all beef patties with lettuce and tomatoes but no bun.

They're probably all small salamanders and prong-horned crickets from the Amazon that no human except a few scientists and Yanomami have ever laid eyes upon - I'll bet their populations were small to begin with, but news on their demise most undoubtedly will affect the price of oil on tomorrow's NYMEX commodities market
