Thirty to 40 years ago, if a bridge washed out, a trail crew would simply fell two trees and rebuild it, she said. Today, park officials must analyze the environmental impact of building a new bridge and build it from materials that are not on hand, such as fiberglass.
Well there's one problem. The park is already preserved, trees fall all over any park in these here parts by the thousands every winter, including along and into rivers, lakes, washes, ravines....
Drop two new trees, drag them into position, attach puncheons or whatever. Cost: A few days of crew labor and the judgement of a competent trail engineer/crew leader.
Result: fix lots of bridges and trail for the cost of one pointless EIS and the wasted money on non native materials.
We've allowed the system to become so sclerotic and paralyzed by environmental non issues it can't save the forest because of the trees.
