Downhill yields to uphill. Wheels yield to heels. Everyone yields to horses. The theory behind downhill yields to uphill is that the uphill hiker is in stride, and it is harder to resume stride on the upslope. Common sense must prevail, of course. If the slope is steep and the downhill hiker is moving fast, then the uphill hiker should yield. Trail Etiquette

I just get off period, often before the approaching party sees me. It just uncomplicates things and I'm not in much of a hurry anyway. Getting out of the way of horses justs makes sense-giving them lots of room and getting below the trail. I've seen too many people who just barely have control of them.
