Alternate route via #21 West Boundary Rd. *
One vehicle at end of road @ 1:20 pm
Follow abandoned roadbed to NPS gate through DNR managed
plantation units. From NPS gate, service road drops (200 ft?) down to
Queets River Road. Approx. 1 mi. from end of DNR road to Queets River Road. Approx. 1.5 mi. from end of service road to Queets RS and west
end of Sams River Loop Trail.
North side of loop: several good-size blowdowns: largest is a 24" hemlock halfway between RS and CG. Trail tread faint from lack of use. Lots of small litter on trail.
South Side of loop: many small blowdowns at east end. Trail very faint through old homestead meadow: meadow being overgrown with cut-leaf blackberry. Needs flagging on chokecherry bush halfway through meadow, and about 1/4 mi. east of vine-maple tunnel ("hobbit trail" section)( elk trace is leading boots off-route ). Wooden footbridge destroyed: hit by clump of 15"-18" alder blowdown. Log bridge over mud-wallow ok. Small litter length of trail.
Both sides surprisingly clear of brush: salmonberry has only come up about 15"-18" during last 24 months along trail. Signs all okay.
Mouth of Sams has moved downstream about 50 feet since last summer.
Appears as though best ford would be about 100 yards upstream from main mouth of Sams. ( USGS reading at 10 am was 583 cfs )
Didn't ford Queets due to time constraints. Had a snack on gravel bar at mouth of Sams. All quiet except for one Downy Woodpecker and a glimpse of rider on bicycle at CG. Big Spruce near CG still the champion.
Return to vehicle 6:30pm. Kalaloch #1 for sunset.
Weather perfect: low 70's. Not too many bugs, either. Salmonberries are done. Red and Blue Huckleberries ripe. Wild Blackberries just starting to ripen up. Foxgove finally starting to fade out. Fireweed and Pearly Everlasting in profusion along 101.

Good info! Which road is #21?
Glad to see you got out finally. Take any pics? I haven't seen a single Queets trip report yet this summer...

There's two ways to drive... If you go up the Queets road that used to end at the trailhead, you can drive to the Mattheny Creek bridge, and then walk approximately 6 miles... The alternate way is via the West Boundary Road from 101.. You have to take a couple turns along the way, and park in an old gravel pit.. Then walk an abandoned logging road about a mile through to get to the Queets Rd past the washout... Going this way you still have to walk roughly 4 miles total to get to the trailhead.
