We'll be camping up at Baker Lake soon and would like to pick one or 2 dayhikes. Which ones do you suggest? We'll be carrying our toddler in our backpack and don't want anything longer than 6 miles easy or 4 hours max duration (including break). Thanks!

Baker river trail #606 is flat, with spots along the way to stop and play in the river, just drive to the north end of Baker lake road, there is a large parking area. The south portion of the Baker lake trail #610, which runs the length of the lake, on the east side, is a nice walk with views of the dam and the lake, drive to the Kulshan campground, then across the dam, follow the road around the south side of the lake about 1/2 mile to the trailhead on your left hand side. Take FS Rd 1130 to the end and hike up to the ridge at 5,000 ft. Awesome views of Baker and surrounding areas. I was up there yesterday and it's one of the easiest ways to get up high and view Mt Baker. About 2 miles and 1,000 ft elevation gain. Bugs are nasty till you reach the ridge!

I second the Baker Lake trail. Was just up at the lake camping this past weekend with family, including children. The trail is very easy, and goes through lovely sections of old forest. There are opportunities for swimming at about two miles when the trail reaches the lake. Saw another family with several small children who seemed to be having fun on the trail.

Careful - the flies there are big enough to carry off small children.
