I took the wonder dog to the Goat Rox Sunday through Tuesday to finally see what I missed last year in the headwaters basin of the S Fk Tieton river. Turns out I had missed a lot. I'll let the pics do the talking, with a few add-ins: the road to the trailhead is in fantastic shape, and all trails are OK, except a little powdery from the horse traffic and ash from Mt St Helens. There is no good water between the trailhead and the upper basin, due to cow flop in the lower meadows, then just plain, old dry country for much of the hike in. But then you get the freshest glacier water imaginable. Cold lake is marvel that should be on everyone's list. And it is indeed far colder at this lake than at nearby Warm lake. Air temps at Warm lake Monday were about 60 with light breeze and the sun shining, at Cold lake it was 45 with howling winds and no sun. I was prepared, though, and bundled up to enjoy the views. I appologize in advance for my inability to narrow down the pic selections to a reasonable number.

A reasonable number would be twice what you've got here. I demand more!

After doing this hike twice, I still haven't been to Warm lake. The temperature listed for Warm lake was from that area, but not actually at the lake. I got to my campsite (on the trail to Cold lake) at 7:30 pm on Sunday, in the dark, and Monday was spent going to/from Cold lake, then Tuesday it was raining a bit so I only went to the viewpoint for Meade glacier before hoofing it out. Trip stats are: 8 miles in to campsite, 5 miles R/T to Cold lake from there, 9 miles out including detour to Meade viepoint. Elevation was 2,200 ft Sunday, 1,000 ft Monday, Tuesday flat or downhill.

I'm planning on the S Fk Tieton next July, thanks for the teaser. I particularly enjoyed the Conrad Glacier pics for some reason...

Hi Daisy
I wish I could bring Ms. Poo to the social to play with Daisy, but I think hubby wants to take her bird hunting those days...she would love both events equally.

We heard elk bugling quite a bit, sometimes fairly close by. We also heard hoot owls and one bout of coyote howling. That got Daisy's ears up! The only person we saw was a donkey packer (three donkeys) passing thru the Cold lake area on Monday (not including people leaving as I was coming in on Sunday). His vest is the spot of orange in the pic labeled "This is the trail out from CL". The donkeys followed him around like dogs. One of the donkeys has a thing against dogs, and took a run at Daisy, but she was smart enough to run away and the man headed the donkey off anyway. I was quite jealous of his pack-less hiking and luxury camping.
