Weyerhaeuser announced that it has sold its 104,000-acre Snoqualmie Tree Farm to a subsidiary of the John Hancock insurance company. Apparently the Evergreen Trust proposal ran out of time. I wonder if this transaction will lead to any changes in public access to the Tree Farm?

Hopefully this means we don't need a $60 permit to drive on the land anymore.

The 60$ access fee program was not a money maker for Weyerhaeuser. It only helped defray part of the cost of security. Hancock probably won't have the staff to manage an access program. So they will probably have to lock up the farm to keep the vandals and garbage out!

I pretty much agree with Timber Cruiser on this one...it was all a way to keep the Friday night pickup loads of old washing machines from being dump out there. Now they likely will keep much of it locked out all the time! Oh well...there's some fun in "bike-n-hike"

It will be interesting to see whether the forest management plans change.

How does this effect the lake management in the area, or does it?

Anything that effects access will effect lake management. If they cut off public access completely the state will stop managing the lakes. If they allow access the state will continue but access and use will determine at what level.

Hancock has a history of putting heavy gates up to block auto access to their roads/lands...Hanson Lake area Mt. Pilchuck. Hancock as we know is in the timber business, and only minimal interests in any recreation. It's too bad the above area wasn't purchased by a nature-recreation type group.

In the P-I article yesterday, the Cascade Land Trust did say that they'd had a good relationship with Hancock on conservation issues in other areas. But from what I see above about Hancock, we may wish we still had Weyerhaeuser in charge.

I was bike riding on the Griffen Creek road recently. A New sign had been posted, still from Weyerhaeuser. It stated NO motorized access-- though hiking, horses and biking was permitted. The old sign had stated motorized access was through the spur 10 gate and gave times.
Don't know if they also changed the access to the roads east of the county N. fork road.
