Rachel Lake Trail, Oct. 26, 2006 We hiked off into the Box Canyon Creek valley, in a lovely cool misty morning. The scenes of fall colors in the mist changed frequently, and it had its own beauty, completely separate from the sunny-day type. The bracken fern were all frosted and brown, but there were still lots of yellows and some reds left, too, especially on the open slide areas. As the trail left the valley and went up, we saw more and more patches of snow, until at around 4200 feet (guessing) it was six inches deep. By this time, three hours in, we had hit our turn-around time, and so we didn't make it to the lake, but the scenery was more than rewarding enough. The trail itself is very rough in parts, and a veritable seasonal creek in a few places, well, more than a few, sometimes deep enough that you have to detour around. The air was warm and the snow was melting fast, and this contributed to the trail-as-creek effect. You will know if your boots are water-proof or not, here.

Sometimes misty, sometimes light rain, but too warm for more snow.

Turn-around time, we never made it the whole way to the lake, maybe next year.

Yikes, I'm surprised there's so much snow there already. Nice photos, Karen
